To Do List: Change Your World

Comments (8)

Small goals first; then move on to the entire planet.

No generation, political party or movement has the exclusive on change; it can start in our very own small spaces, and you'd be surprised how far the ripples reach. Everybody at every level, in every career stage, has the ability to change their world.

I noticed my $10 store coupon expired when I checked out at my supermarket recently. Just as I thought about the competitor's coupon sitting on my kitchen table from the new store in town, the cashier awarded me the $10 discount anyway. She was empowered to do something small, she did, and gained a satisfied, more loyal shopper who rang the happy customer service bell on my way out the door.

A job seeker, Alec Brownstein, spent $6 on Google AdWords, got two offers from target companies and landed a dream role. His approach won't work for everyone, but it's an example of taking a small step to change his world. It worked, and he did.

Zappos free shipping policy wasn't always universal. The company's customer service team would frequently surprise and delight individual customers with a complimentary upgrade. The positive viral reaction was so strong that CEO Tony Hsieh rolled it out company-wide. What started as a small gesture is now a well-known service commitment embedded into the Zappos brand.

Those at the top don't have to enact the far-reaching change that Zappos did to make a difference. They can start by looking inside their own organizations. Workplace expert and author Leigh Branham, in his recent presentation to ExecuNet members, shared some examples of what the "Best Places to Work" winners did to earn that recognition. Drawing inspiration from Abraham Maslow, CEO Chip Conley of boutique hotel chain Joire de Vivre Hospitality boosted employee recognition and gave managers sabbaticals, and, as a result, significantly reduced turnover and increased customer satisfaction. Conley has written a book about employee engagement and how that translates to increased customer service, and he teaches other companies about his philosophy.

Big or small, internally or externally, to help yourself or help others, it can start today, and it can start with your world. Tell us one of the changes you've made and the results. We'll share some of them on this blog to keep the inspiration going.

It's a psychological fact - if you change the way you do anything - how you act in a situation- for instance- the other entity HAS to act differently. They may not outwardly display a change but over time they will. You are propelling your energy in a new direction and the reciever is complelled to react differently. I have done this many times in my life and it works.

Green Buildings-Reinforced Masonry Construction Method.

Sir,

I would like to introduce one such building construction system which
may change the total scenario of construction business in near future.
*This building system can put a great role in making Green Buildings,
Eco-friendly homes, Hotel, Slum Re-development, Transit Camp.

*It’s called Reinforced Masonry or C.M.U.,or Reinforced Concrete Block
Masonry.(R.C.B.) Hope you must have heard about this or else to know
more please visit our web site. www.AffordableConstruction.in

1)R.C.C.(Reinforced Cement Concrete) type of construction was taught by British & we are following
Beam & Column type of construction for the last hundred years or so in
India.

2) R. C. C. building needs repairs within 15 years of construction.
Not that anything is wrong with R. C. C. but there is more scope to
use inferior material & workmanship in R.C.C.& hence need for early
repair.

3)Our Forts, Old buildings V. T. Station. Municipal Bldg., Palaces,
Towers are generally constructed by Stone Masonry load bearing method
& have stood for hundreds of years without any major repair work.

4)The same load bearing technology has been further developed in
U.S.A.& is called R.C.B.(Reinforced Concrete Block) which is Speedy, Sturdy, Simple, Durable,
Eco-Friendly also saves 20&#xin; construction cost. Called
R.C.B./Reinforced Masonry.

5)R. C.B. is a proven method of construction with millions of
buildings being built by this way in the world.

6) 300 buildings are built by R.C.B. design in India & U.S.A. by us.

7)Eco-friendly as it SAVES
100 r;icks,50&#xst;eel+shuttering,40 o;ncrete,25&#xut;ility bill.

So R.C.B./C.M.U./Reinforced Masonry is Eco-friendly,
Affordable,Durable,Speedy,Simple.
----------------
Advantages of shear wall R.C.B. method of construction
---------------
A)Economy : As steel, cement, shuttering, concrete & Labour required is
almost half & due to simplicity of construction & speed minimum saving
is Rs. 200/- per sq. ft.

B)Fire Proof : Due to concrete block & 3" cover to steel, rusting is
minimized & such buildings are fire & bomb last proof.

C)Durable : Concrete blocks are attractive, durable and have excellent
thermal, acoustic properties. No repair like R.C.C. is needed in every
ten years.

D)Earthquake: Load bearing concrete blocks can be designed to be wind,
earthquake resistant too.

E)Speed: No heavy equipment needed on site, less form-work, less steel
so construction is simple, speedier & hence economical.

E)Architecture: Ancient type of architectural elevation is also
possible by R.C.B type of construction.

Kamat hotel (I) Ltd
Ganaka motel
Arch. Bhatnagar
Arch. Chavathe
Arch. Kudalkar
Arch Premnath
------------
METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
------------
*8"X8"X16" concrete blocks
with two holes are laid one upon another by staggered joint.
*Vertical reinforcement is placed through these holes & those holes are grouted.
*No column, No beam just shear wall & slab staircase is by R.C.C.
*Foundation is simple R.C.C. wall footing.
------------------
CONCLUSION
------------------
*Considering durability, speed, simplicity & saving this R.C.B
construction is particularly suited for housing, slum project, transit
camp, schools, hospital, hotel, bungalow & industrial projects.

*Note : the concrete blocks used here are load bearing blocks of
strength 40,000 kg per blocks & NOT local blocks

I agree with your observations about small changes leading to big revelations. The mindset needed to "achieve" is a personal philosophy that requires no authority or permission from anyone else. That means that even your "boss" should not influence your decision to succeed or achieve.

So go out and make a big difference by doing "small" things....

Thanks, Sara. We don't always have to "think outside the box." Sometimes we can stay in the box, take a different perspective and see things in a new way that works for us.

I am working on a similar theme on my latest blog entry called: "Indomitable Will" Write your goals down and post them in a place or add them as a daily reminder so that you take steps each day towards achieving them.

Great article!
